A network failure by a major communications provider almost cost the Pirates a forfeit against ACTID just as a dismal second quarter almost cost them the game as a slew of unforced errors gave possession and points to the boys in blue. Off the court, tensions have been brewing amongst members of the Pirates squad as they discovered that several players have been endorsing rival cereal brands.
The Pirates got off to a great start in terms of possession but four successive turnovers in the space of two minutes drew the ire of Coach Kleinbrenner before some settling play by Daz Jamieson and Brett Butler helped ease Special K’s blood pressure. The Pirates were up 15 points to 4 by the end of the period.
Another four straight turnovers at the beginning of the second quarter combined with a loose player in the Pirates back court translated into eleven straight points for the visitors. A visibly unhappy Kleinbrenner substituted the entire team, stopping the leak of points and allowing ACTID to go into the half-time break on equal points with the Pirates.
Keeping the Pirates on track became the responsibility of Kel Dullihanty who had a stellar game with 12 points, 7 assists and 2 steals. His most memorable contributions came in the form of his exquisite passing that found their mark and provided for some easy and spectacular points for the Pirates.
ACTID were missing some of their big-guns for this game but they didn’t appear overly affected by their absence as the entire squad stepped up to fill the void. Luke Arsego was 70% from the field and having one of his best games of his career with ACTID, Justin Koenig was unstoppable from out on the wing as he drove to the hoop for all but one of his six buckets.
By three-quarter time ACTID only trailed the Pirates by 9 points and although the Pirates would go on to post a further 18 points in the space of ten minutes their performance was well full of mistakes and missed opportunities. ACTID however punched above their weight as they put on a further ten points to make the final result a respectable 52 points to 34 victory to the scurvy sea dogs.
